Guatemala City

Locals call this bustling city “Guate”, while elsewhere in the country, it’s known as la capital. Either way, we’re hoping you’ll call Guatemala City your next vacation escape when you’re done reading this. Thanks to its friendly citizens, unique attractions and proximity to outdoor experiences, Guatemala’s capital makes a great starting point for any trip exploring this spectacular country.

Visit Guatemala City: get started

No trip to Guatemala City is complete without visiting the iconic Palacio Nacional de la Cultura Museum, which was once the old presidential palace. After, visit the Catedral Metropolitana next door, which has survived multiple earthquakes. For a lesson in local culture, check out the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Textiles and Clothing before heading to Mercado Central for some handicrafts to take home. If you’re interested in being immersed in nature, the Botanical Gardens are the perfect spot for serenity in the city, while Agua and Pacaya offer opportunities to explore a volcano.

When to visit

For sunny weather, we’d recommend going during the dry season between November and April, ideal for exploring the city.

What to bring back

Fine spirits like Zacapa (aged rum) or Quetzalteca (fire water), Guatemalan coffee (renowned for its quality), jadeite jewelry (rarer than nephrite jade), traditional textiles or ceremonial masks.

What to eat

Tortilla dishes like tacos, tostada (fried and topped with tomato sauce, beans & more), pupusa (beans, pork rinds or cheese stuffed in a grilled corn meal patty); veggie dishes like chojín (radish salad with pork rinds) or elote (grilled corn). To drink, enjoy local spirits like rum, chicha (corn beer or cusha (homebrewed corn spirit); or beverages like coffee or hot chocolate.

Fun fact

Guatemala City is Guatemala’s 3rd capital city. Its 1st capital was in Ciudad Vieja, which was destroyed by lava flows in 1541, and relocated to Antigua Guatemala, destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. Third time’s the charm!
